Winter 2003 poetry by steve hodgin
Flight of the Snow Geese

Sounds of snow geese in the sky
on their southern journey high
beyond the clouds and winter's breath

Through the days in autumn flight
they make passage; rest by night
in some secluded place

No marvel that these birds should sing
I stand in awe as they take wing
but pity me below

God has a timetable. Nature is a constant ticking clock Is it not marvelous how every animal bird and fish always seems to know what time it is? Do we watch the signs and listen so carefully as they do?

Winter Day  Dec 5

The day is cold and damp
The birds are dark and gray
songbirds sing no music
for most have gone away

The trees are bare and dreary
forlorn they look to me
just outside my window
that is all I see

Yet God is working softly
as all creation sighs
cedar trees are whispering
beneath the cold dark skies

Winter's breath is healing
designed by God's decree
Let me light my old wood stove
come and sit with me

 Winter Song    Dec 6

In some orchestral theme
the wind whips leaves
like dancers in the sky
Snow flakes dream
of their chance to fly
Children play
with sounds of laughter
Creation sings a happy song
as winter calls; not to work
but play for just a while
and God in heaven smiles
for it is good

"Wait a Little While"

I was in a hurry but
God stopped me at the door.
Seeing through the window,
a sight He did implore;

for poetry was written,
in the fallen snow.
Although in quite a hurry,
I haven't time to go.

This time is meant for writing,
 to share the sight I see;
for nature is God's daily gift
throughout eternity

The earth received a blanket,
everywhere in sight;
a hundred trillion snowflakes,
fallen in the night.

Every leaf and man made thing,
is covered by the snow;
and here there is no darkness,
unless viewed from below

Tranquil peace envelopes me,
as if in God's embrace;
the very thought excites me,
a smile draws to my face.

Standing just inside the door,
Both feet on the rug,
I feel his love surround me,
just like an awesome hug.
