"The Library"
"The Library"
More than paper on the shelves,
lined in neat array;
these thoughts of many writers,
from past to present day.

Their subjects range from "A to Z";
from reference to fiction.
Some have speeches we have heard,
and even books on diction.

These aisles are halls of learning,
uncontained by time,
proclaiming of the scholars,
and poet's verse in rhyme.

But here are the great questions,
which I should ask of you,
who visit here so frequently,
with nothing much to do.

Is this just a study hall,
or more a place to learn?
Would you discover treasures here,
and secrets to discern?

Would you relive adventures past,
or travel o'er the earth,
by atlas and geography,
and do you know the worth...

Of all the many hours spent,
by writers of our past,
traversing time by centuries,
whose thoughts we have held fast.

For through the portals of this room,
you each may meet the sages,
of every country, time or place,
transcending all the ages.

PERSONAL DEDICATION

This poem is dedicated to the students of Watson Chapel Junior High School, in Pine Bluff, AR, and especially to Mrs. Harmon's 7th period class.  They were a splendid and responsive audience in a long day of poetry recitals.  It is inspired by the Library where our meeting took place... in the hope that these words so written might inspire great thinkers to share great thoughts by great writing.  Great writing takes years of practice.  You will gain a great advantage if you begin while you are still young.
